If you’re looking for a way to bring life, color, and a little magic to your yard, a butterfly garden might be just what you need. We absolutely love helping customers design butterfly-friendly spaces that not only look beautiful but also support our local pollinators.
What is a butterfly garden? A butterfly garden is exactly what it sounds like…it’s a space planted specifically to attract butterflies and help them thrive. In Visalia’s warm Central Valley climate, we’re in the perfect spot to support a variety of native butterflies. With a few thoughtful plant choices and a little planning, you can create a garden that flutters with color all season long.
Why Create a Butterfly Garden?
We all know that butterflies are pretty and fun to watch flutter about, but did you know that they’re essential pollinators and a sign of a healthy ecosystem? Many native butterfly species are declining due to habitat loss, so creating a small oasis in your backyard makes a real difference.Saving pollinators one garden at a time.
Bonus…it’s a great way to get kids excited about gardening, learn about nature, and enjoy peaceful time outdoors. We are always looking for ways to include the kiddos
Here are some design tips for a successful butterfly garden to get you started!
Choose the Right Location
Butterflies love sunshine. Pick a spot in your yard that gets at least 5–6 hours of full sun each day. A sheltered area with some protection from wind is ideal.
Include Host and Nectar Plants
Butterflies need two types of plants:
Nectar plants
These feed adult butterflies. Think bright, fragrant flowers like:
- Lantana
- Verbena
- Coneflower (Echinacea)
- Butterfly bush (Buddleia)
- Zinnias
- Milkweed (bonus—it’s both a nectar and host plant!)
Host plants
These are where butterflies lay their eggs, and where caterpillars feed and grow. Each species prefers specific host plants.
- Milkweed – For monarchs
- Fennel, parsley, or dill – For swallowtails
- California native grasses or mallows – For other native butterflies
Don’t Forget Water and Shelter
Butterflies need shallow water sources. A small dish with wet sand or a “puddling station” (just add water to a sunny patch of soil) works perfectly. Make sure to include a few flat rocks or stepping stones where butterflies can bask in the sun. If your garden has trees or shrubs nearby that is even better as they’ll use them as shelter and resting spots.
Keep It Natural
Avoid pesticides and herbicides, as they can harm butterflies, caterpillars, and other helpful insects. The goal is to create a natural, chemical-free zone where pollinators feel safe and welcome.
