Happy New Year, Visalia! We think that there is something special about January with the fresh air, the slower pace, and the feeling that anything is possible. At Luis Nursery, we know that the garden is one of the best places to embrace a fresh start. Whether you’re planning big changes or just want to nurture what you already have, a new year is the perfect time to reflect, dream, and dig in.
Are you ready to kick off 2025 with a “new year, new garden” mindset, right here in our beautiful Central Valley?
Here is how:
Reflect on Last Year’s Garden
What worked well last year? Before you start planting, take a moment to think back. Did your tomatoes thrive? Did you finally find a shady spot perfect for your ferns?
What didn’t go so well? Did a few plants struggle in the heat, or did weeds get the better of you by summer?
Take a moment to grab a notebook or just walk your yard and make a few mental notes. The more you learn from last year, the better your garden will grow this year. Live and learn!
Plan with Purpose
Now’s a great time to sketch out ideas, even if it’s just on the back of an envelope. Are you ready to start a veggie garden? Do you want to add more pollinator-friendly plants and attract those hummingbirds, bees and butterflies? How about growing your own herbs for cooking or sourdough baking? Whether your goals are big or small, writing them down helps turn dreams into action. We know you want to dive in, but planning ahead will help you plant your way to success!
We love helping fellow gardeners to plan. Bring in photos or your rough sketches, and we’ll help you pick the right plants for the right places.
Start with Winter Planting
Yes, you can absolutely plant in January in Visalia! Our mild winters allow for cool-season vegetables like lettuce, spinach, beets, carrots, onions, and garlic. You can also plant bare-root fruit trees this time of year—think apples, peaches, plums, and nectarines. One of the best parts of living in the Central Valley is we can have our hands in the dirt all year round!
Winter flowers like pansies, violas, snapdragons, and calendula can also bring cheerful color to your beds and containers right now.
Prep Your Soil
If you’re planning new beds or revamping old ones, now’s the time to build a strong foundation. Add compost or organic soil amendments to enrich the soil and prepare it for spring planting. Good soil is the heart of a healthy garden. Show it some love and it will love you back.
We carry high-quality compost, soil, and mulch—just ask us what would be best for your project.
Are you Ready to Try Something New?
A new year is the perfect excuse to step out of your comfort zone. Need some ideas?
- Try a drought-tolerant landscape section
