As we are sprucing up our backyard patios or adding a little greenery to our indoor spaces, one of the most important—and fun—decisions we get to make is choosing the right pottery for our plants. At Luis Nursery we love helping customers in Visalia and Central Valley area find pots that not only look beautiful but also support healthy, thriving plants.

Did you know that there is more to picking the right pot than just color or style? Yes of course those matter too!Let’s take a look at what to consider when choosing the perfect container for your garden or houseplants.

Start with the Right Size

Size matters when it comes to pots. Too small, and your plant’s roots will get crowded and stressed. Too large, and the soil may hold too much water, leading to rot. A good rule of thumb is to choose a pot that’s 1–2 inches larger in diameter than your current one for houseplants, or big enough to give your garden plants room to grow without drowning in excess soil. If you would like some help to size things right—just bring in a photo or measurements of your plant!

Drainage is a Must

Always choose pots with drainage holes! This is especially for outdoor and indoor plants that don’t like “wet feet” (think succulents, citrus trees, herbs, and most houseplants). Drainage helps prevent overwatering and root rot.

If you fall in love with a pot that doesn’t have holes (it happens!), you can either drill some if the material allows, or use it as a decorative outer container—just place a plastic nursery pot with holes inside.

Pick the Right Material for the Job

Each type of pottery has its pros and cons, depending on your space and needs:

Terracotta (clay): Breathable, classic, and great for succulents and herbs. They dry out faster, which is great in our warm Visalia summers!
Ceramic/Glazed: Beautiful and moisture-retaining. Great for houseplants or shaded outdoor spots.
Plastic: Lightweight, budget-friendly, and holds moisture well—perfect for large plants or hot spots.
Concrete or Fiberstone: Stylish and sturdy, great for large statement plants, indoors or out.

Match Style with Space

Pottery is like the furniture of your plant world—it should complement your space! Soft blues, earthy neutrals, and natural textures are popular in Visalia gardens. Bright colors can add a pop of personality to patios or kitchen windows.

If you are looking for modern, rustic, farmhouse, or minimalist styles, we’ve got pottery that fits your vibe. These and more!

Think Seasonal and Practical

Want to move your pots around with the seasons? Choose lighter materials or place pots on rolling plant caddies. Also, consider frost resistance for outdoor pots if we get a chilly snap in winter.

We carry a wide selection of beautiful, functional pottery in all sizes, colors, and materials. Need help choosing the right one? Our team is always happy to match you (and your plant) with the perfect pot.
