Did time get away from you? It happens to all of us. We begin the year with the best of intentions and dreams of our bountiful summer gardens and suddenly we blink and it’s June. Does that mean it’s time to put away the gardening gloves and think we’ll do better next year? Nope! It’s not time to give up. There are certain plants you can plant in June and July that will survive and reward you before summer’s end.
What to know
It’s important to know your zone and current conditions. Here in Visalia, California it gets pretty hot in June and July and that can be a bit more challenging than some other summer climates. Your plants are going to need a bit more hands on care to get established during drought or intense heat. You will need to keep an eye on your plants watering needs.
What to plant
- Greens – Greens are quick growing, and you can harvest them as baby greens or fully-grown greens depending on your needs. As it heats up the greens will grow better in partial shade. Choose varieties that are slow to bolt.
- Marigolds – These multi-tasking beauties (hint mosquito repellent), will not only provide quick blooming fall color, but can withstand the hottest temps.
- Green Beans – You can grow green beans a few times throughout the summer. They grow quickly and can be harvested within 50 days. They will do well in containers or in gardens.
- Velvet Elvis – If you’re looking to add some purple beauty to your garden this is your gal. This plant is great for pots and shady garden areas.
- Basil – This versatile herb doesn’t like the cold and loves the sun. During the summer months it grows fast. If you let some of the basil go to flower it will invite pollinators as well.
- Coleus– If you’re looking for color and structure in your garden this is a garden workhorse. The foliage is fast growing and versatile.
- Summer Squash – Within 35-50 days of planting you can harvest your summer squash! In warmer climates if you plant later, you can avoid squash vine borer moths.
- Mandevilla – This tropical vine produces beautiful trumpet-shaped flowers in various colors. The fragrant blooms attract hummingbirds and butterflies. They need a lot of sun to flower.
- Salvia – This velvety cousin of the culinary herb is fast growing and blooms continuously. These are great for attracting pollinators and adding color to pots or entryways.
- Cucumbers – These can usually be harvested in 50 days and should be picked when the right size or they will taste bitter. You can grow them either in vining or bush varieties.
What to remember
The most important things that your plants need are temperature, light, healthy soil, and consistent watering. If you want them to grow fast and healthy, you’ll need to monitor their growth and make sure they are getting enough nutrients and what fertilizer they might need.
It’s never too late to start, let’s get gardening!
