How to add instant curb appeal for your home

One thing you often see popping up in yards during spring are “for sale” signs. If you’re thinking of selling your home, curb appeal is a great way to get attention and make a great first impression. We’ve rounded up a few easy ways to use plants, flowers and accessories to add instant curb appeal that you can use – whether you’re moving or not!

Dress Up Your Entry: Your home’s front entryway is the centerpiece of its curb appeal. Make it stand out by cleaning your front door and adding a fresh wreath or swag to it. Place colorful container gardens on either side to draw the eye. And to really impress the senses, place fragrant plants such as Lavender, Jasmine, Gardenia, Roses or even potted citrus trees in pots of varying height near all doors and entrances.

Foundational Plants: Using glossy green plants like Boxwoods, or breezy care-free shrubs like Nandina, is a great way to create visual interest, line pathways, or create frames for other colorful displays. If there is an area of your front yard that seems “unfinished” or messy, creating a border might be the finishing touch you need.

Fill in Bare Spots: Unsightly bare spots under trees or in areas that don’t get much sun such as against walls are a great spot for shade-loving plants like Hostas, Hydrangeas, Begonias, Foxgloves, Camellias, and Fuchsias.

Fresh Mulch or Decorative Bark: A quick and easy way to make your home and garden look neat and well-cared for is to freshen up the mulch or add decorative bark in your flower beds. The earthy color contrasts with flowers to help their colors appear even brighter, and some types such as cedar can even smell good.

Container Gardens: Fresh, colorful arrangements in stylish planters or hanging baskets are a sure bet for adding curb appeal. It’s easy to create your own arrangement, but if you’re in a hurry you can always purchase ready-made containers too. Don’t forget to use a few containers in your backyard, too, for extra appeal all around.

Accessories: Adding eye-catching accessories to your home’s exterior such as patio furniture, colorful welcome mats, pretty pots, bird baths, fountains, and statuary is another great way to set the mood and improve potential buyers’ first impressions of your home for sale. Be sure to clean any existing furniture, statues, bird baths, etc., and make sure water fountains are in good working order for ultimate appeal.
