Once you have your bareroot roses, you’ll need to get them in the ground. This is the best time of year to plant to give them time to get established and have gorgeous blooms this spring, summer and fall. Here’s what you need to know to get started:

First, you’ll want to re-hydrate your bare root roses in a bucket of water. Unwrap carefully and place in a bucket of water overnight before planting. Don’t leave outside if you expect freezing temperatures, though.

Next, dig a hole in an area that will get lots of sun and has soil that will drain well. Take out any rocks or roots that will get in the way of root development. Make the hole deep enough for the root ball to be at ground level and wide enough that the roots can spread out. Add fertilizer, compost or manure and mix it well into the soil under where the base will be to provide nutrients as it grows.

Place your rose in the hole and arrange so the root ball is at ground level and the roots are spread out. Fill in hole with the soil and tamp down gently to ensure no air pockets remain. Other wise you’ll get settling and your roots may be exposed which will damage the plant. Water well and watch for soil settling over the next few days in case you need to add more.
