Plant of the Month: Saucer Magnolia

We are so in love with this month’s Plant of the Month! It has quickly become one of our most popular trees! We are excited to share with you the beautiful Saucer Magnolia (aka Tulip Magnolia or Magnolia x soulangeana).

This gorgeous tree has fragrant, early-spring blossoms that are shaded with light to deep pink or purplish-pink. You really can’t stop looking at these beautiful blooms! The Saucer Magnolia’s blooms are large, saucer-shaped flowers – hence the name! It has low branches with silvery-gray smooth bark, and big, broad dark green leaves. The tree usually blooms from late February to early April, so now is the best time to appreciate these beautiful trees. Some trees can even extend their bloom season through summer and sometimes into winter.

The Saucer Magnolia is usually a fast-growing tree, thrives in a wide variety of environments, and is tolerant to pollution. It generally reaches about 20’-30’ tall and has a 25’ spread. When adding a Saucer Magnolia to your landscape, you will want to make sure that you keep the soil moist, and plant it somewhere with full sun. They prefer acidic soil and grow very well in the San Joaquin Valley.

If you appreciate attracting birds to your yard, this beautiful tree also provides a wonderful nesting site for local wildlife and the seeds are eaten by a variety of birds.
